Elías Valiña Sampedro

Today we officially walked across the border from Castilla y León into Galicia and arrived in O Cebreiro.

For many pilgrims on the Camino this is a favoured starting point (and indeed it seemed there were many fresh faces wandering around this small town looking to escape the wet weather).

I was particularly interested in visiting the memorial for Elías Valiña Sampedro – considered by many as the modern father of the Frances Camino Way (which we have been walking all this time).

Elías was responsible for painting so many of the yellow arrows all along the route to guide pilgrims along the Way. He helped recover many lost paths for the Camino and is responsible for the current surge in numbers walking the Camino.

Thanks Elías for your wonderful legacy.
